How to Create a Reverse Foiled Christmas Card
This project uses both traditional hot foiling and reverse foiling to create two beautiful backgrounds from a single piece of foil.
Step 1 – Foil and Reverse Foil the Snowflake Background
Heat the Glimmer II Hot Foil System.

Place the Snowfall Shimmer Press + Foil Plate onto the heated platform.

Add Matte Gold Glimmer Hot Foil, shiny side down.

Place Classic White ColorWheel Cardstock on top.

Add the two Glimmer shims.

Run through the Platinum SIX Die Cutting Machine.

Remove the foil to reveal the snowflake background.

Save the used foil.

Place the leftover foil onto Glimmer Specialty Cardstock and position the A2 Solid Rectangle Press + Foil Plate on top.

Add a paper shim and run through the machine.

Reveal the reverse-foiled panel.

Compare the original foiled panel and the reverse-foiled panel.

Designer Tip: Glimmer Specialty Cardstock produces the cleanest reverse-foiling results because of its ultra-smooth surface.
Designer Tip: Glimmer Specialty Cardstock is the key to successful reverse foiling because its ultra-smooth surface allows excellent foil transfer.
Step 2 – Foil and Reverse Foil the Sentiments
Foil the Merry Messages Press & Foil Plate and Die Set using Matte Gold Glimmer Hot Foil and Classic White ColorWheel Cardstock.

Allow the panel to cool and carefully remove the foil.

Save the leftover foil for reverse foiling.

Position the leftover foil over Glimmer Specialty Cardstock and place the A2 Solid Rectangle Press + Foil Plate on top.

Add a paper shim if needed and run through the Platinum SIX Die Cutting Machine.

Reveal the reverse foiled sentiment panel and die-cut the sentiments with the coordinating dies.

Designer Tip: Keep both the original foiled sentiment and the reverse foiled version. The reverse version often works beautifully on future projects.
Step 3 – Die Cut and Assemble the Poinsettia and Greenery
Using the Christmas Foliage Etched Dies, die-cut the poinsettia layers from Poppy and Cranberry ColorWheel Cardstock.

Die-cut poinsettia centers from Gold Assortment Treasured Cardstock along with the pine needles, holly leaves, and additional greenery from Peridot, Rainforest, and Fern ColorWheel Cardstock.

Begin assembling the poinsettia layers with liquid glue.

Assemble the berry clusters and holly leaves.

Build the larger foliage sprays and greenery clusters.

Set all completed floral elements aside until card assembly.
Designer Tip: Die-cut a few extra foliage pieces while everything is already set up. Extras are useful for additional cards or adjusting the arrangement later.
Step 4 – Die Cut Background Elements
Die-cut an arch from the reverse foiled snowflake panel using Essential Arches Etched Dies.

Position the die so the largest snowflake remains visible within the finished arch.
Die-cut a white background panel using Perfect Touch Rectangles and Tag Etched Dies.
Die-cut the Merry Messages sentiment using the coordinating die.
Step 5 – Assemble the Card Front
Add White Foam Adhesive Strips 2mm to the back of the reverse foiled arch.

Add a small amount of liquid glue over the foam strips. This gives you a little time to reposition the panel before the adhesive grabs permanently.
Center the arch onto the white die-cut background panel.
Add foam adhesive beneath part of the sentiment and liquid glue on the remaining section.

Adhere the sentiment approximately one-third of the way up the arch panel.
Designer Tip: Combining foam adhesive with liquid glue gives you both dimension and repositioning time.
Step 6 – Add the Floral Arrangement
Attach the completed poinsettia using foam adhesive.

Trim the pine branches and arrange them behind the flower.

Add the holly leaves and three-leaf sprays around the poinsettia.

Trim and add the larger foliage sprays to fill any gaps and create balance around the arrangement.

Finish the arrangement with berry clusters tucked into the greenery.
Designer Tip: Work outward from the poinsettia and build the arrangement gradually. This makes it easier to maintain balance and prevent overcrowding.
Step 7 – Finish the Card
Add Red Color Essentials Gems to the berry clusters.
Adhere the completed panel to a top-folding A2 note card.
Make any final adjustments to the foliage before the adhesive dries completely.

Your reverse foiled Christmas card is complete!
Tips for Better Reverse Foiling Results
- Save every leftover foil piece. Even small sections can be reused for sentiments and accents.
- Use Glimmer Specialty Cardstock for the most consistent reverse foil transfer.
- Add a paper shim during reverse foiling if your transfer appears incomplete.
- Always test a small piece before creating larger background panels.
- Coordinate foil colors with embellishments and metallic cardstock for a polished design.
Ways to Customize This Project
- Use silver, copper, or rose gold foil instead of matte gold.
- Create a winter floral arrangement without the poinsettia.
- Substitute birthday, thank-you, or friendship sentiments.
- Create a shaped card base using the arched panel.
- Add glitter cardstock accents for extra sparkle.
- Experiment with different foiled background patterns.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is reverse foiling?
Reverse foiling uses leftover foil from a previous foiling project to create a second foiled panel, allowing you to get more value from the same foil sheet.
Do I need specialty cardstock for reverse foiling?
While standard cardstock can work, Glimmer Specialty Cardstock often provides the smoothest and most complete foil transfer.
Why add a paper shim during reverse foiling?
The extra shim can increase pressure and improve foil transfer, especially when working with detailed designs.
Can I use reverse foiling for sentiments?
Absolutely. Reverse foiling works beautifully on both sentiments and larger background designs.
