Learn How to Use the Mansard Roof Etched Dies

Hello there, Michelle Short here to share a step-by-step tutorial with you using the new Mansard Roof Etched Dies from the Yana Smakula Christmas City Holiday collection. This set works to add a mansard roof to the existing City Holiday Etched Dies apartment building. I love how it completely changes the look of the building!

I went with a pink, red, and black colour palette today, but I know this apartment would look great in lots of different combinations!

Die-cut the Mansard Roof Etched Dies, as well as the City Holiday Etched Dies:

NOTE: The dies are shown in the photo facing upwards, so that you can see which die is cut from which cardstock. When die-cutting, you need to have the cut side facing down onto the cardstock.

1. Die-cut the main apartment building, chimneys, and window mouldings from Blush ColorWheel Cardstock.
2. Die-cut window mouldings three times.
3. Die-cut chimneys twice (if creating a shaped card, these will be adhered to the back. If adhering the house onto a card base, this step is not necessary).

4. Die cut main roof, trim, and chimney toppers from Raven ColorWheel Cardstock.
5. Die-cut semi-circle window mouldings from Tutu ColorWheel Cardstock three times.
6. Die-cut the base layer of both windows from Chiffon ColorWheel Cardstock three times each.

7. Die-cut large window (for the frame only), door (for the frame only), doorsteps, windowsills, small window frame, and medium window frame (add frame piece inside base layer) from Classic White ColorWheel Cardstock.
8. The window frames need to be cut three times each.
9. Die-cut wreath and tree from Rainforest ColorWheel Cardstock.
10. Die-cut curtains from Poppy ColorWheel Cardstock three times.

11. Die-cut a large window from Chiffon ColorWheel Cardstock (for inside piece).
12. Die-cut a door from Raven ColorWheel Cardstock.
13. Die-cut bow four times from Poppy ColorWheel Cardstock.
14. Die-cut bow three times from Tutu ColorWheel Cardstock.

15. Hold dies down onto cardstock using Best Ever Craft Tape.
16. Run through Platinum Six Die Cutting Machine using the following sandwich (bottom to top):

• A Platform Base
• B Platform Top
• C Cutting Plate
• Cardstock with die on top
• C Cutting Plate

Start with mansard roof:

1. Pop out inside pieces (chads) from windows. The Precision Tool is great for this!

2. Apply small dabs of Bearly Art Glue onto the back of the frame.

3. Adhere to base of window.

4. Adhere to window mouldings.

5. Adhere red bow to frame.
6. Repeat process for all three windows.

7. Adhere windows to roof.

8. Adhere chimney pieces back-to-back (the chimneys will show on the back of the card, so by having the two layers back-to-back, they will look nice from either side. Two layers also give stability).

9. Adhere chimney toppers.

10. Adhere semi-circle mouldings above windows.

11. Adhere chimneys to apartment building on either side.

12. Adhere roof on top, lining up the top of the roof with the top of the building.

13. If creating a shaped card, create 3 ½” x 5” card base from Blush ColorWheel Cardstock.
14. Add tape runner adhesive to the front.

15. Adhere apartment building on top.

TIP: It is easier to do this step now when there are not as many layers on the card. 

16. Adhere base layer of roof trim to the bottom of the roof.
17. Adhere thicker trim to the top.
18. Adhere thinner trim to the bottom.

19. Adhere trim to the top of the roof.

20. Flip window frame over and add dabs of glue to the sides.
21. Adhere curtains on top.

22. Add glue onto the back of the frame and curtains.
23. Adhere to base of window.
24. Adhere windowsill.

25. Adhere pink bow on top.
26. Repeat the process for all three windows.

27. Adhere windows to building.

TIP: There are etched lines on the apartment building to know where to place the windows and door.

28. Adhere large window frame to building.

29. Adhere Christmas tree to the inside piece of the window.

30. Cut off excess hanging over the edge using scissors.

31. Adhere inside frame.
32. Adhere windowsill.

33. Adhere door frame.
34. Adhere door inside.

35. Adhere doorsteps in place.

36. Adhere bow to wreath.
37. Adhere wreath to door.

1. Plug Glimmer Hot Foil System in and switch on.
2. Cut small piece of Opaque Black Glimmer Hot Foil Roll and place shiny side up onto a piece of Classic White ColorWheel Cardstock.
3. Take ‘seasons greetings’ sentiment from Holiday Hugs Sentiments and place impression side down on top of the foil.
4. Hold foil and plate in place onto cardstock using Best Ever Craft Tape.

Please Note: There are different methods of hot foiling. It is not necessary to hold plates onto the foil and cardstock, but it does help to prevent shifting when running through a die-cutting machine. If you are a beginner to hot foiling, try a few different methods and see which one works best for you.

5. When green ‘platform ready’ light shines green, place cardstock/foil/plate on top, plate side down.
6. Press timer button. This will flash green on and off while the plate is heating up.

7. Once light turns solid green, remove platform from base and place shims on top.

8. Run through Platinum Six Die Cutting Machine.
9. Place platform back into base.
10. Remove shims.
11. Carefully remove cardstock/foil/plate.

12. Using the tape as a handle, lift foil and plate from cardstock.
13. Place onto silicone mat to cool the plate.

14. Place coordinating die over the sentiment.
15. Hold in place with Best Ever Craft Tape.
16. Run through Platinum Six Die Cutting Machine using the same process as in step 1.
17. Pop sentiment out from die.

18. Add foam squares to the back of the sentiment.
19. Remove backings off foam squares.
20. Adhere to card.

1. Add teeny Onyx Color Essentials Gem to the door (for a door handle).
2. Add Red Color Essentials Gems to the centres of the red bows.
3. Add Pink Color Essentials Gems to the centres of the pink bows.
4. Add Pink Color Essentials Gems around the sentiment.

As you can see, this card is a lot of steps, but in my opinion, is so worth spending the extra time doing so. I like to die-cut all the pieces first, but it is a lot to do in one go, so this can be separated into the roof, main building with windows, and then embellishments. In terms of design, however, I did keep it fairly simple, but you can definitely go all out with the Christmas decorations too! Thank you so much for stopping by the blog today.
