Hello! It's Amy Tsuruta, and I'm excited to share a project featuring the new Harvest Witch Boot from Nichol Spohr's Halloween Felt Stitch & Create Collection. If you've followed me for any length of time, you probably know I'm a huge fan of Nichol's felt collections. They're relaxing to stitch, beautifully designed, and they always inspire me to create projects that go beyond traditional cards.
Today I decided to turn the Harvest Witch Boot into a dimensional hoop décor piece. Embroidery hoops make wonderful seasonal decorations because they're lightweight, easy to display, and give you permission to add lots of layers and texture without worrying about mailing the finished project.
Let's gather everything we need and start building this spooky-but-sweet Halloween decoration.
Here are step-by-step details on how to build this project, starting with the use of the Platinum SIX Machine which now comes with the Universal Plate System - 6” Platform.
Build the appropriate die-cutting sandwich using the Spellbinders Universal Plates. The recipes can be found on Plates A + B. For today’s project, starting from the bottom and working to the top: A, B, C, paper/felt, die, C
Cut the Harvest Witch Boot out of Coal Wool from the Holiday Collection.
Cut out the rest of the pieces for the project:
- Leaves - Mossy Wool from the Holiday Collection
- Scallop Flower - Iris Wool from the Trend Collection
- Daisy Flower - Chiffon Wool from the Trend Collection
Continue with the die cutting:
- Another Scallop flower - Iris Wool from the Trend Collection
- Boo to You sentiment from the Simon Hurley - Boo Crew - ColorWheel Raven
- Boo to You outline from the Simon Hurley - Boo Crew - Vellum
- Die cut the Woven Lattice Texture - ColorWheel Orchid
Start the stitching on the witch's boot using black embroidery thread and an embroidery needle.
- Use three strands of floss.
- Use the basic embroidery stitching - Back Stitch.
- Start from the underside of the felt and come up a corner hole. Go down through the second hole and back up the third hole. Then go down through the second hole again.
- Keep going all the way around the boot.
Finish the Boot Lace detail using Cream Embroidery Floss.
Stitch the two leaves using a green embroidery thread.
Roll the two scallop strips and the daisy strip to create dimensional flowers. Secure each flower by piercing the embroidery needle through the base and wrapping the thread around once or twice before tying a knot. I love this technique because it keeps the flowers nice and tight while allowing them to fluff back open after they're attached.
Time to build your project. Starting with the first layer, which is the hoop and the Woven Lattice Texture.
- I use liquid adhesive for the felt and paper elements.
Add the Harvest Witch Boot and sentiment.
Add the blooms and leaves.
I chose Coal Wool for the boot because it creates a dramatic contrast against the Orchid lattice background. The Iris and Chiffon flowers soften the design while still keeping the Halloween color palette playful rather than spooky.
Once complete, this project can be displayed on a wreath hanger, tucked onto a shelf, propped on a craft room desk, or incorporated into a Halloween gallery wall. It would also make a thoughtful handmade hostess gift during the fall season.
