How to Make a Flowing Florals Birthday Card with 3D Embossing Folders and Layered Stencils

How to Make a Flowing Florals Birthday Card with 3D Embossing Folders and Layered Stencils

Hello crafters! It’s Lisa Tilson here with you today to share a card using the Timeless Textures Collection by Simon Hurley. I am going to be doing a step-by-step photo tutorial showing you how to create this arch-framed birthday card using the super pretty Flowing Florals 3D Embossing Folder along with the Flowing Florals Layered Stencils. Also included in this collection is another beautiful 3D Embossing Folder with layering stencils, which is called Hummingbird Garden. This set also comes with dies to cut the hummingbirds out. There is also a standalone 3D Embossing Folder called Rattan Cane.

So, let’s get started with my card for today.

Embossing The Cardstock

How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Start by taking an A2 panel of Classic White ColorWheel Cardstock (4.25” x 5.5”) and spritzing it on both sides with water.
TIP: Spritzing the cardstock before embossing helps to prevent the cardstock from cracking or tearing, and it loosens the fibres. This means that the cardstock will stretch into those deep intricate areas of the folder, resulting in a deep and even texture across the panel.
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Place the panel inside the Flowing Florals 3D Embossing Folder.
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Insert the embossing folder in between the Platinum SIX Die Cutting Machine Platform Base (A) and Adaptor Plate (D)
  2. Run the sandwich through the die cutting machine.

Adding Colour to Your Embossed Panel

How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Make sure your embossed panel is dry and then place it onto a sticky mat and admire the beautiful texture!
TIP: This panel has a lot of texture, and although it is placed on a sticky mat, tape has also been used to secure it in place. The deep texture means that the panel doesn’t sit quite as flat on the mat as a plain panel of cardstock would.
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Align Stencil 1 from Flowing Florals Layered Stencils over your embossed panel and use Best Ever Craft Tape to tape it securely at the sides.
  2. Use small pieces of yellow tape to mask off the flowers that will be inked up with a different colour.
  3. Using a Medium Blending Brush, apply Picked Raspberry Distress Ink through the stencil. Concentrate the colour at the base of the flower and fade it out towards the ends.
  4. Slowly and carefully remove the yellow tape to prevent any tearing.
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Next, place the pieces of yellow tape over the pink flowers.
  2. Using a Medium Blending Brush, apply Wild Honey Distress Ink through the remaining flowers. Again, concentrate the colour at the bottom of the flowers and fade it out towards the ends.
  3. Carefully remove the yellow tape.

  1. Align Stencil 2 over the embossed panel.
  2. Blend Twisted Citron Distress Ink through all the open areas.
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Using a Mini Blending Brush, apply Mowed Lawn Distress Inks to the lower areas of the stems.
TIP: This doesn’t need to be 100% accurate. The point of adding an additional green onto the stems is just to give them some extra interest.

  1. Align Stencil 3 over the embossed panel and secure it in place.
  2. Blend Salvaged Patina Distress Ink through the open areas.

  1. Use a Mini Blending Brush to apply Mowed Lawn Distress Ink to the bottom areas of the leaves.

Creating the Frame

For all the die cutting, use the Platinum SIX Die Cutting Machine with the die cutting sandwich as follows (from bottom to top):
  • Plate A – Platform Base
  • Plate B – Platform Top
  • Plate C – Cutting Plate
  • Plate C – Cutting Plate
The cardstock/die will be inserted between the two cutting plates with the die sitting on top of the cardstock, cutting edge down. How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Take the Essential Arches Etched Dies and remove the 4th and 5th largest arch dies.
  2. Tape the 4th largest arch die onto an A2 panel of Classic white ColorWheel Cardstock.
  3. Tape it in place.
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Die cut the panel using the sandwich above.
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Place the die-cut arch panel onto another A2 panel of Classic White ColorWheel Cardstock.
  2. Secure it in place at the top using Best Ever Craft Tape.
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Using the largest arch panel as a guide, place the 5th largest arch die onto the panel below and tape it in place.
  2. Make sure that your die is equidistant the whole way round.
  3. Run the two panels through the die cutting machine.
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. You will now have two perfectly aligned arch frames.

Creating the Sentiment

How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Take the Layered Happy Birthday Etched Dies and place the word die onto a piece of glitter cardstock from Gold Assortment Treasured Cardstock.
  2. Place the shadow die onto some white cardstock. The shadow die will need to be die cut twice from white cardstock.
  3. Run them through the die-cutting machine.
NOTE: The dies have been placed cutting side up to more easily show you which die is which. Before die cutting, flip them over so the cutting side sits on the cardstock and tape them in place. How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Remove the negative pieces of the Happy Birthday Word Die using the Precision Tool from Handy Craft Tool Set. The “p”, “y” and the straight section of the “B” are not joined to the main die cut, so try not to lose them!
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Add small dabs of Bearly Art Glue onto the back of the word die. Tap off any excess glue onto some scrap paper.

  1. Place the word die onto one of the white shadow die cut pieces.
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Adhere the “p” and “y” as well as the straight section of the “b” in place.
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Add liquid glue onto the remaining white shadow die cut and adhere the other piece on top. This just gives the sentiment some extra stability.

Assembling the Card

How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Add glue onto the back of the embossed panel and adhere it onto an A2 top-folding Classic White ColorWheel Cardstock note card (11” x 4.25”, scored and folded at 5.5”).
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Adhere the smaller arch frame directly onto the embossed panel using liquid glue.
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Add foam tape onto the back of the larger arch frame panel.
How To Create An Arch Framed Birthday Card with Simon Hurley Flowing Florals, E3D-182, STN-134, S1-188, S5-526
  1. Remove the backing from the foam tape and add liquid glue onto it. The application of the liquid glue will allow you a little bit of wiggle room for the next step.
  2. Place this larger arched panel down over the smaller arched panel. You should now have both frames in place, and they will be perfectly aligned with each other.

  1. Add some Gold Mix Color Essentials Gems into the white areas of the embossed panel to finish the card.
I hope you find today’s tutorial useful. This panel creates such a pretty design and the texture from the 3D embossing is fabulous – not only visually but also when you run your fingers over it! Using a double arch frame adds a little extra interest into the mix and the gold glitter and gems give it some gorgeous sparkle. Realistic Primrose Card Tutorial with Serenity Garden Dies

Realistic Primrose Card Tutorial with Serenity Garden Dies

Hello, everyone! I’m Jaycee, and I am thrilled to be sharing a project here on the Spellbinders blog today. You can usually find me over at my YouTube Channel, Instagram, and crafty blog, where I dive deep into the intersection of design principles and paper crafting.

Mastering the Botanical Cluster: A Study in Primrose Composition by Jaycee Gaspar, S2-447, E3D-168, BP-298

For today’s project, I wanted to push the boundaries of the STC Primrose set. While die-cutting often leans toward the whimsical, I’ve always been captivated by the organic textures and subtle color shifts found in nature. I spent some time gathering botanical reference images of primroses, focusing specifically on how the light hits the 'stitched' ridges of the petals and how the centers transition from a bright chartreuse to a deep gold. My goal was to move beyond standard assembly and use these dies to create a card that feels like a hand-plucked specimen from a spring garden. Whether you are a fan of botanical realism or just looking to add a little extra 'life' to your die cuts, I hope this project inspires you to look at your stash through a more organic lens. Mastering the Botanical Cluster: A Study in Primrose Composition by Jaycee Gaspar, S2-447, E3D-168, BP-298 Die cut the petal layers five times for ten individual pieces from white cardstock Die cut each leaf cluster three times for nine individual foliage elements from Peridot cardstock Die cut five of the Primrose centers from Beeswax cardstock Mastering the Botanical Cluster: A Study in Primrose Composition by Jaycee Gaspar, S2-447, E3D-168, BP-298 Starting with the white petal elements, use alcohol-based markers to block in a dark green center. From that green anchor, transition the color outward into a bright yellow halo using a sharp, triangular shape. To truly mimic the natural waxy sheen and genetic markings of a real Primrose, apply striations of deep purple, primary red, and pink markers toward the outer edges.
  • It is vital to leave a "hard edge" here rather than blending the colors into a smooth gradient. In nature, primrose petals often possess a satiny, almost reflective texture that creates high-contrast color breaks. By avoiding a soft blend, you simulate the way light hits these organic ridges, giving your paper flowers the illusion of living, breathing botanical specimens rather than flat die-cuts.
For the anther and filament layers die-cut from Beeswax cardstock, add a touch of green to the tips using a coordinating alcohol marker to ground the yellow paper.  Set these components aside to dry completely before texturizing. Mastering the Botanical Cluster: A Study in Primrose Composition by Jaycee Gaspar, S2-447, E3D-168, BP-298 Use an array of green alcohol markers to add striations to the foliage layers die-cut from Peridot.  Similar to the petal layers, ensure that the colored leaf veins are mostly unblended to create the crumpled and shiny texture of Primrose leaves.  Set aside. Mastering the Botanical Cluster: A Study in Primrose Composition by Jaycee Gaspar, S2-447, E3D-168, BP-298 With a needle-tipped tool (I am showing the discontinued Bloom Tool; however, the Tool ‘n One has the exact attachment), create vein details on all the petal layers.  The vein details are a “V” shape, stacked in a chevron formation to the center of the flower.  Use the Handy Foam Mat to help support the petals while giving the paper some texture.  Repeat the texture step for all ten die-cut and colored cardstock petal layers. Mastering the Botanical Cluster: A Study in Primrose Composition by Jaycee Gaspar, S2-447, E3D-168, BP-298 Use Susan’s Garden Flower Mold Tray to help hold and support the primrose die-cut petals while gluing.  Use a ball-end tool (like the Altenew Petal Shaper Tool) to create an indentation on the center of the flower.  I used the ¼” cavity to support the paper while pressing to make the petals flat, but the center of the flower have a dimple in the center. After all the petal pairs are glued together, glue the flower anther and stamen layer to the center of the Primrose.  Let the glue fully dry before assembly. Mastering the Botanical Cluster: A Study in Primrose Composition by Jaycee Gaspar, S2-447, E3D-168, BP-298 Emboss a 4 ¼” X 5 ½” Alabaster panel of cardstock using Ode to a Poet 3D Embossing Folder.  Give the cardstock a tea-aged appearance by using a blending tool and a light warm brown ink to catch the high edges of the embossed cardstock panel.  Also distress the edges of the embossed cardstock with the same ink. Mastering the Botanical Cluster: A Study in Primrose Composition by Jaycee Gaspar, S2-447, E3D-168, BP-298 On another piece of Alabaster cardstock and the same brown ink from the previous step, letter press the Crafty Hugs Sentiments Press Plate & Die Set by Yana Smakula - Just a Note.  Use the coordinating offset die to cut the sentiment and a blank cardstock piece.  Glue and stack the two cardstock layers together for a sturdier sentiment banner. Mastering the Botanical Cluster: A Study in Primrose Composition by Jaycee Gaspar, S2-447, E3D-168, BP-298 Apply a generous layer of dry adhesive to the back of the Ode to a Poet embossed panel and center it onto an A2 top-folding card base. To create a realistic focal point, begin by dry-fitting your largest primrose blooms in a triangular formation slightly off-center. Use high-density foam adhesive on the back of the primary flowers to lift them away from the textured background. Tuck the foliage and smaller buds underneath the edges of the main blooms, secured with liquid glue at the stems. This variation in height mimics the natural habit of a primrose plant, where leaves often cradle the blooms. Ensure some leaves overlap the embossed "frame" of the background to create a sense of depth and movement. Mastering the Botanical Cluster: A Study in Primrose Composition by Jaycee Gaspar, S2-447, E3D-168, BP-298 Before foam mounting the Just a Note sentiment, add Pearl Gold splatter from Spellbinders + Yasutomo Water Color Mixing Set.  After the splatter dries, foam mount the sentiment using double layers to ensure the sentiment is at the very front of the botanical composition. Mastering the Botanical Cluster: A Study in Primrose Composition by Jaycee Gaspar, S2-447, E3D-168, BP-298 After foam mounting the sentiment, glue the embossed panel and completed botanical arrangement to a side-folding 4 ¼” X 5 ½” note card base. Mastering the Botanical Cluster: A Study in Primrose Composition by Jaycee Gaspar, S2-447, E3D-168, BP-298 Thank you so much for spending some time in the garden with me today! I hope these techniques for adding realistic texture and unblended color striations encourage you to look at your die sets as more than just shapes, but as the building blocks for true botanical art. There is something incredibly rewarding about slowing down to study a reference image and bringing that organic beauty to life with nothing but paper and ink. Mastering the Botanical Cluster: A Study in Primrose Composition by Jaycee Gaspar, S2-447, E3D-168, BP-298 I would love to see how you interpret these blooms!
