Video: Dragonfly Pop-up Card

Video: Dragonfly Pop-up Card

Hi everyone, Ilina here today today with a fun interactive card and a video tutorial for you. For my card today I decided to transform 2-D die cuts into interactive pop-up elements.

I started the card by creating the center pop up first, and then the front of my card. To create the pop-up in the middle of my card I used the Dragonfly Fancy Die, along with the Paper Layering Sunflower. To create the dragonfly you will need three dragonfly die cuts, one each from Pool Layering Paper, Black Layering Paper and Vellum.

Fold the black dragonfly in mountain fold along the center, and the pool one in valley fold. Then trim off the wings on the black one, leaving little bit of them (like tabs), so they can be adhered to the pool one. Trim off the head and body on the pool dragonfly. Cut small slits on both parts and interlace them together with the pool dragonfly being on the bottom. I used liquid adhesive to adhere the black wing tabs to the pool ones. Then adhered the vellum wings on the base of the pool ones. Set it aside. In a similar way I created the flower pop up.

Watch the video tutorial below to see how I made this card:

If you’re having a problem viewing this video, please try watching it HERE in HD on YouTube.

For the flower pop up in the middle I cut two sunflowers from two different shades of Sunshine Layering Paper and cut out the center from the lighter one leaving two little tabs to use them to adhere to the base flower. Fold both in the center creating a valley fold from the darker sunflower and mountain fold on the center. Adhere together and then in the center of your card. Add leaves from Foliage Layering Paper. (Watch the video above to see the full tutorial.)

I used the same elements for the front of my card. I added a little bit of dimension by applying Butter Bar, Orange Soda , Aegean and Forever Green ink to the dragonfly, flower and leaves. To add some extra interest dry embossed the Snow Layering Paper panel using the Dragonfly Fancy Die. For the sentiment I used the Wishing Well set and stamped it on Black Layering Paper (Midnight Mix) with Versamark and embossed with Detail White embossing powder. Added some White Iridescent Shimmer Spray to the dragonfly (using a paint brush) and Pool Mixed Accents. I adhered the panel to a black folded note card.

Thanks for stopping by today and hope you are inspired to try your hand at converting 2-D die cuts into pop-ups.

This is such a beautiful card! Everything seems so hard and it’s so intricate but after reading how it was made and watching the video I think it’s actually going to be fun to make. Thank you Hero Arts.

This was an interesting video, however, the fast forward made it quite difficult to follow what was going on with the flowers. Super card!

The card is very nice but like so many others it was going to fast for me to understand what was going on at times. Maybe not speed up so much. Nice job and very nice card.

Love the card and colors. So glad you did a video, but wish I could slow it down at times. Went a little too fast for me to catch all the details of making the pop-up mechanism. I’ll have to watch a few more times to figure it out.

Loved your pop-up card. I never thought of doing it using my dies. Your tutorial was very helpful.

Beautiful card. Appreciate the directions – just that it was going to fast and hard to capture what you were talking about concerning how the dragon fly is cut and then placed together. Otherwise wonderful and – Thank You.

Gorgeous card and then to open it and have it pop up is so cool! Everyone loves interactive cards. Got a little lost on the video tutorial but was in a hurry and didn’t have time to go back and watch it slowly. I’m sure once I do that I’ll have it cased. Thanks for the inspiration!
