Saturdays with Sally: Playing with Texture Tiles

Our Mixed Media Catalog is just filled with awesome stamps and Tiling Textures brings so many possibilities. I love patterns and textures on everything, so let me show you a few ideas you might not have thought of.

I have always loved black and white designs. But they get even more fun when you add a pop of color! I randomly stamped the Tiling Textures tiles on Dove White Cardstock, getting the edges close enough without overlapping. I then mounted it onto a card base made from Cherry Cardstock, leaving red at the top and bottom. I used the Nesting Hearts Infinity Dies to cut out hearts from Cherry and Gold Glitter cardstocks, and added a message from my stash with a little glitter paper "tassel".

Here's something other than a card! While those stamps were all inked up with black, I took the opportunity to stamp the same patterns on a piece of fabric. I actually used an old white sheet - upcycling!! But you could also use unbleached muslin or similar fabric. I stamped a large enough square of these tiles to make a potholder. If you're going to try this kind of project, find some red fabric and die cut a small heart and sew it to the front. Before you go any further, HEAT SET your inks with an iron. Let cool. Cut another square and a piece of heat resistant cotton batting. Sew the top piece and batting on the tile edges to make it look like hand quilting. Sandwich all the pieces together inside out - ie stamped images on the inside. Tuck a tiny strip if you wish for a hanger. Stitch 1/4" all around except for where you are flipping inside out. Turn inside out, press, and topstitch 1/4" around. Hand sew where the hole is. I first did this over 25 years ago for a Hero Arts catalog shoot and I still have the potholder. A little faded but full of memories!

A fun fact about this stamp set that I didn't use for these projects - they are called "tiling" textures because the images tile. This means if you take one of the square patterns and stamp it repeatedly, the pattern will line up and create a continuous image! This makes the set so much fun for building endless backgrounds!
