How to Make a Watercolor House-Mouse Card

Step 1 – Stamp the Image and Sentiment

To make the card, start by cutting a piece of watercolor paper to 4½" × 6". I used hot press watercolor paper because it has less texture, and detailed image stamps generally stamp better on smoother watercolor paper.

If you have a pre-cut A2 panel measuring 4¼" × 5½", that works as well. I prefer starting with a slightly larger piece in case my stamped image isn't perfectly centered.

Stamp the main image using black waterproof ink. Stamp the sentiment directly underneath the image.

To prevent smudging the stamped image and sentiment while painting, allow the ink to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

You can also use a heat tool to speed up the drying process.

Step 2 – Watercolor the Image

Once the ink is completely dry, color the image using watercolors of your choice. For this card, I used watercolor markers and a water brush.

If watercoloring isn't your preferred medium, you can use alcohol markers, colored pencils, or another coloring method. Just be sure to use paper and ink compatible with the medium you've chosen.

Step 3 – Die-Cut the Image Panel and Prepare the Layers

Once the watercoloring has completely dried, begin preparing your card layers.

Using the Essential Arches Etched Dies, die-cut the watercolor panel using the third largest die in the set.

Die-cut a coordinating mat from Fern ColorWheel Cardstock using the second largest arch die.

Cut a 4¼" × 5½" A2 panel from Oceanside ColorWheel Cardstock.

Create an A2 top-folding card base from white cardstock measuring 4¼" × 11", scored and folded at 5½". You can also use a premade A2 card base.

Step 4 – Ink Blend the Background

Using the Large Blending Brush, apply dark teal ink around the edges of the Oceanside cardstock panel.

This simple shading technique adds depth while drawing attention toward the focal image.

Step 5 – Assemble the Card

Now that all of the components are prepared, you can assemble the card.

Start by adhering the Oceanside panel to the front of the white top-folding note card.

Next, adhere the watercolor image arch onto the Fern arch layer.

Apply foam tape to the back of the layered arch panel and adhere it to the center of the card front for added dimension.

Finish the card by adding several Teal Color Essentials Gems around the focal image.

Tips for Better Watercolored Stamped Cards

  • Use hot press watercolor paper when stamping detailed images for sharper impressions.
  • Always allow waterproof ink to dry thoroughly before adding watercolor.
  • Keep your background simple when working with large detailed focal images.
  • Layer die-cut mats behind watercolor panels to help frame the artwork.
  • Use foam tape behind the focal panel to create depth without adding visual clutter.

Ways to Customize This Project

  • Try different ColorWheel Cardstock colors for the layered arch mat.
  • Use alcohol markers instead of watercolor markers.
  • Add a softly ink-blended sky behind the stamped image.
  • Replace the sentiment with a birthday or thank-you greeting.
  • Add splattered watercolor droplets for additional texture.
  • Use coordinating gems in a different color palette.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best paper for watercoloring stamped images?

Hot press watercolor paper provides a smooth surface that captures detailed stamped images while still allowing beautiful watercolor blending.

Can I use alcohol markers instead of watercolor markers?

Yes. You can substitute alcohol markers or other coloring mediums as long as you use the appropriate paper and ink combination.

Why should I use a larger watercolor panel initially?

Starting with a larger panel gives you flexibility if the image is not perfectly centered and allows you to die cut the final panel after coloring.

What adhesive works best for layered focal panels?

Foam tape works particularly well because it adds dimension while securely attaching the finished panel to the card front.
