Hello Crafters! It's Kelly Taylor here with you today to share a fun technique creating a textured brick background. I love doing this background in a neutral so it adds interest to my card without overwhelming the focal point.
You can see on my slimline card I used the Brick Wall Stencil as a background to create a wall for my windows to sit. Wouldn't this be an amazing view?! You could use any of our Looking Glass Dies to create this look but I wanted to use the Looking Glass Forest & Mountains . This card is a congratulations card for my nephew who loves skiing and snowboarding. Although you could certainly color this as a summer scene too!
I started by cutting our Dove White cardstock to 8.5 x 3.75 inches. The Brick Wall Stencil is not a slimline stencil but it's SO easy to stretch it. I held my stencil in place with some low tack tape and then blended on both Charcoal and Granite ink. I did this randomly to create different depths within the brick. You don't want to go all the way to the right hand side though. I used my Extra Large Blending Brushes to apply the ink, making sure to apply lighter color towards the right side of the stencil. I left about a half inch unblended on that side. This makes it easier to move the stencil further down the background. They won't line up perfectly but because we left that blending nice and light, no one will know. After I moved my stencil to cover the right side of the background I applied the same inks this time being light handed on the left hand side.
Once the ink blending was done I put my stencil back in place and added my texture. I chose to use Hero Paste which is white in color. I applied it the same way I did the ink blending, randomly. I didn't completely cover the ink blending because that is what adds the shading to the bricks. I also did the same thing I did with the ink blending. Again, I left about a half inch without Hero Paste on the right hand side. Once I moved the stencil I added the rest of the Hero Paste to the right side.
I die cut all of the pieces and parts of the Looking Glass Forest & Mountains and colored them quickly with the markers. I also cut out three frames from the Looking Glass Circle & Square Frames to cover up my assembly. The sentiments are from the Seaside Highway HeroScape . They were stamped in Unicorn Pigment Ink and heat embossed with White Detail Embossing Powder on Charcoal cardstock.
